Do I need a permit?

If you are installing new fences in your front yard, most communities require a building permit; however, they vary from suburb to suburb.

How do I choose a fence style?

There are many styles of fencing to choose from. The first step is defining what you want, and we can help with that. After we know your vision of the perfect fence, it’s easier to find a provider who has the style you’ve been looking for.

The main factors for choosing a fence include:

How long do I want my fence to last? How much is the upfront cost versus how long will it last? What style do I want? Privacy or decorative fencing? Durability of materials and construction. Maintenance (using vinyl, wood or chain link vs steel). Price/Durability ratio.

How tall should my fence be?

In most cases your fence can be whatever height you would like. The typical fence heights range from 3′ to 6′, and the most common is 4′.

What is the most durable fence material?

Fences are traditionally made of wood, chain link, vinyl or steel. Wooden fences have the highest up-front cost and lowest long term cost. Vinyl is in the middle for both price and durability. Chain link is relatively low priced with high durability (barbed wire would be higher). Steel has a very low up front installation cost but also a low durability factor.

Different materials have their own benefits and drawbacks, it all comes down to what you are looking for in the long term cost and durability.

Fencing materials also include cedar, redwood or treated wood. For example full length redwood fences look great but they have high up-front costs while vinyl has low up-front costs with low long term durability.

What is the best fencing material for a pool area?

For use around pools, experts recommend vinyl or chain link fences instead of cedar fences. This helps ensure that your fence won’t fall over into your swimming pool and injure someone. The reason for this is due to the natural oils in cedar wood. They can cause the wood to warp and crack, giving it a very unstable appearance. The warping allows the wind to easily blow over your fence and into your pool area.

Fencing for Dogs:

Dogs are welcome in our homes but they need to be kept safe from other animals and people who may harm them. A good rule of thumb for choosing the right fence is to make sure it’s tall enough so that your pet can’t jump over. Keep in mind, however, that some dogs are very good at jumping!

There are many different types of dog fences:

Picket – This fence style you’re probably most familiar with. It consists of evenly spaced vertical pickets that are attractive, but not as functional.

Split Rail – This type of fence uses rails which have been split in half with the flat sides facing out. The rails are spaced close together to prevent animals and pests from going through them, yet they’re wide enough to give pets plenty of room to roam.

Do I need a fence permit Bayside city council?

In some cases, a building permit will be required, this is generally when the fence has the potential to impact the general public or block essential lines of sight. For example, if the fence runs along a front, side or rear street and is

  • higher than average
  • contains barbed wire
  • may impact vision at an intersection
  • or is more than 2m high.

Even if you don’t need a permit, there are regulations that apply including:

  • Maximum front, side and rear fence heights
  • Fence lengths and setbacks
  • Fences near intersections
  • Fences opposite neighbours’ windows, in particular north-facing windows
  • Fences near neighbours’ outdoor recreational space
